The Town Council is proud to honour those people that have rendered eminent service to the town.

The Council decides on awarding Honorary Citizenships against the following criteria:

People from all walks of life and all sections of society who have made a significant difference over a long period of time to the community of Dorchester are eligible to be nominated for civic honours whether or not they are resident in the town, provided that their contribution has been on a voluntary basis and not as a result of their paid employment.

  • Nominations must show by example that the nominee is a person or persons of distinction and/or a person(s) who has or have rendered eminent services to Dorchester.

This civic honour is restricted to the life of the individual honoured and is not hereditary, serving councillors are not able to receive such an honour. Additionally, there can be no more than five living Honorary Citizens at any one time.

Since 1974 the Council has only awarded a total of nine Honorary Citizens.
