Mayor receives a civic cushion!

20 Aug 2008

Dorchester Stitchers present new Mayoral cushion

The Mayor of Dorchester has a new Mayoral Cushion, thanks to the efforts of Dorchester Stitchers.

The cushion is used in the Mayoral pew at formal civic services in St Peter's Church.  The previous one was showing its age and the Dorchester Stitchers enthusiastically agreed to provide a replacement.

They have now formally handed it over to the Mayor, Councillor Kate Hebditch, who will be the first Mayor to use it at the Ceremonial Opening of the Crown Court (the Judge's Service) on Friday 28 November.  She said "I am delighted and really proud to receive the cushion and should like to thank the many members of the Dorchester Stitchers who have produced it.  It is a very welcome contribution to Dorchester's civic life."

The cushion shows the Mayoral Seal flanked by representations of Dorchester's two maces.

Dorchester Stitchers came together initially to help produce the Dorchester 700 community tapestry which was produced as part of the celebrations of Dorchester's 700th Anniversary as County Town in 2005.  They enjoyed themselves so much that they have stayed together and continue to produce needlework for organisations within the Town.  They are currently working on two altar cloths and have agreed to produce new cushions for the two 17th century chairs which the Mayor and Town Clerk use in the Council Chamber, upstairs in the Corn Exchange building.
